The shocking facts and statistics I shared in my last blog about the impact of Covid 19 on the disabled community, demonstrate that it’s now more important than ever to explore and challenge perceptions of disability.
With that in mind, I’m really excited to be organising and hosting the first We Are All Disabled conference, which will take place in Newcastle in October.
‘We Are All Disabled’ is a controversial statement which means different things to different people. I am keen to embrace this controversy and explore diverse opinions with a range of speakers and facilitators from different sectors of the disabled and non-disabled community.
The conference will also launch a series of workshops on the theme of ‘Are you sitting uncomfortably?’ where I aim to create a safe and supportive space for people to have open conversations about subjects and issues which they find difficult.
I’m very grateful to have the support of Disability North and Project North East who are helping me to organise the event and Virgin Money who are providing the venue.
Our aim is to hold this conference every year but first we need to prove it works and with your help we can do that.
I have set up a Crowdfunder page and any support you can give will help to reach as wide an audience as possible – locally, nationally and globally and make this first conference the best it can be.
I hope to make the event informative, engaging, challenging, funny and inspiring and would like as many people as possible to attend and help make it a big success. More information on the programme and how to book tickets will be available soon, so watch this space!…
